In 2015, a follow-up project SCAPIS – SciLifeLab Wellness Profiling was initiated with funding from KCAP to allow continuous monitoring of biomarkers after the initial base-line examination for a subset of the individuals recruited to the large SCAPIS study. The primary goal of the SCAPIS – SciLifeLab Wellness Profiling study is to develop "The SCAPIS study has already yielded novel data on the prevalence of coronary artery disease in the general population, and will address many critical questions over the long term," she said. The Swedish CArdioPulmonarybioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, advances in large-scale omics, Swedish registers and epidemiological analyses and wellness profiling.

Individuals, who are sam-pled from the total population register [2], are recruited via invitation to a clinical examination. Selective participation is a concern in SCAPIS, and in many other general population studies [3], “The SCAPIS study will provide excellent opportunities to identify new associations between biomarkers for disease in blood samples collected here in the last 30 years with the subsequent findings on lung and heart disease,” says Anders Blomberg, principal researcher at SCAPIS and professor at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine at Umeå University. Within SCAPIS, data from about 30,000 people has been collected at six university hospitals in Sweden, wherein each study participant was mapped with different samples and examinations and also had to answer a variety of questions in surveys.

Rationale and Objectives: Emphysema is a hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The risk-factor pattern for cardiovascular diseases has changed during the last decades as smoking and blood lipids has decreased while metabolic risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes has increased. SCAPIS, funded by the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, enrolled more than 30,000 men and women age 50 to 64 from the general population, of whom 25,182 with no known coronary disease were imaged using coronary CT angiography. Imaging was performed at six different universities, with each doing approximately 5,000 CT angiograms.
